Girard
resumed the shipping trade with New Orleans and Santo Domingo, starting a
partnership with his brother Captain John Girard a few years later. The
brothers did not get along very well and in 1790 the partnership was
dissolved, leaving Stephen with two ships and cargo worth 30'000 $, his
share of the venture. By sheer luck, these two vessels soon became the
instruments of another great stroke by which Stephen Girard built his
fortune …
