Among the lasting relicts
of his life was Belcourt Castle, a 60-room French chateau, finished in 1894
at a cost of $3 million. There the O.H.P Belmonts settled after their
marriage. Like Alva's Marble House, Belcourt was designed by Richard Morris
Hunt, then the most renowned architect for the rich and famous. In 1897, the
Belmonts commissioned Hunt's son Richard to design yet another palatial
estate : Brookholt at Hemstead, Long Island. There, Oliver Belmont died of
appendicitis in 1908. ...
