Belmont organized and presided over both, the Rapid Transit Subway
Construction Company, which built the line between 1900 and 1904 (and
extended it thereafter) and the Interborough Rapid Transit Company, which
subsequently operated the line. The key partners of Belmont in the project
were contractor John B. McDonald, engineers William Barclay Parsons and
Cornelius Vanderbilt jr, railroad men Morton Freeman Plant and Edward Payson
Bryan, as well as a couple of fellow bankers, including William A. Read,
Walter G. Oakman and George Washington Young. ...
