Fisher Winchester (1810-1880) had the background of a merchant and
shirt manufacturer before entering the armory business, which made him rich
and famous. With his partner John M. Davies, Winchester established a modern
shirt factory in New Haven in 1848. Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson started
their career as arms manufacturers precisely with the company that would
once bear the name of Winchester. In 1855, they formed the Volcanic
Repeating Arms Company in Norwich Connecticut, of which Oliver Winchester
became a shareholder. Two years later the company was bankrupt and
