Robert "King" Carter - richest man in America … Although Robert Carter (1663-1732) was not destined by birthright to become the principal of the family, his abilities in business made him so successful that he eventually became the richest man of Virginia and probably of America too, sharing the latter position with Kilian Van Rensselaer, the 3rd generation heir of Rensselarswyck and largest landowner of New York. Robert Carter started his career as a justice of peace, later becoming a Burgess of Virginia, a Speaker of the House of Burgesses and an active member of the Council.
