Howland family is famous in America because of its Mayflower ancestry
through John Howland (1592-1672) who married Elizabeth Tilley, another
Mayflower passenger, and had ten children, four sons and six daughters. From
their ninth child, a son named Joseph Howland (1640-1704), a large real
estate owner in Plymouth, and his wife Elizabeth Southworth, descended the
branch which created the great shipping mercantile business of Howland &
