James, Thomas and Samuel Perkins had merchants' blood in their veins when
they were born. Their grandfather Thomas Handasyd Peck was a successful
hatter and merchant in Boston. When their father James Perkins, a prosperous
wine merchant, died in 1773, their mother, the former Elizabeth Peck, took
charge of the family, opening a store, where she sold imported goods. From
