Salem shipping merchants … Salem, the former Naumkeag started as a small fishing settlement led by Roger Conant (1592-1679) in 1626. Even more than in Boston, a rocky soil and harsh climate forced the settlers to turn towards the sea for their survival and prosperity. By the mid 1600's trade with the West Indies developed, favored by the Navigation Acts of 1660 and 1663, which gave the American colonies a virtual monopoly on such trade. To supply trade and fisheries, a local shipbuilding industry soon developed. Early merchants, such as Philip English prospered as did Salem, with the triangular trade being particularly lucrative. In the 1690's Salem was rocked by the famous witch trials, for which the city is mainly remembered nowadays. The Molasses Act of 1733 …
