   The Crowninshields - Salem shipping merchants  

Another prominent dynasty of Salem shipping merchants were the Crowninshields, descendents of Dr Johann Kaspar Richter Von Kroninschilt from Leipzig in Germany, who settled in Salem at the end of the 17th century. Captain John Crowninshield, a son and the first of the family with the americanized name, built one of the first Georgian mansions of Salem in 1727. The house was the home of four generations of Crowninshields until 1832
