Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was the son of a prominent landowner Colonel
Peter Jefferson (1708-1757), who accumulated 7'000 acres in Albemarle
County, Virginia. Jefferson's mother was Jane Randolph (1720-1776), daughter
of Isham Randolph of Dungeness plantation, making Thomas Jefferson a member
of the prominent Randolph family of Virginia. From these origins, Thomas
Jefferson started in life with the clear advantage of a Southern aristocrat,
