The
origin of what would become the great New York Central System was a
little railroad of just 16 miles called the Mohawk & Hudson, after
the two rivers which were linked by the road. The original promoter
of the scheme, George Featherstonaugh, was a gentleman farmer of
Duanesburgh. With the support of Stephen Van Rensselaer III, the
last patroon of Rensselaerswyck and an influent man in Albany,
Featherstonaugh secured a charter for the Mohawk & Hudson Railroad
in 1826, just one year after the Erie Canal had opened for traffic …
