Whereas
the Union Pacific Railroad was the much publicized main part of the
transcontinental railroad, the Act of 1862 also chartered two other
companies, set to be its feeder lines: the Central Pacific Railroad
in the West from California and the Leavenworth, Pawnee & Western in
the East from Kansas City. Both feeder lines were included in the
Pacific Railroad Bill thanks to the successful lobbying of their
promoters in Washington and both lines profited from the initial
