One passion he kept during his later years, was horse-breeding and the sponsorship of horse-racing. On his 1200 acres farm near Babylon NY, he bred some of America's finest racehorses and trained them on his private tracks. With stock speculator Leonard W. Jerome (Winston Churchill's maternal grandfather), August Belmont was a founder (and president) of the American Jockey Club and in 1866, they established Jerome Park, the famous New York horse racing ground. There on June 17, 1867 they inaugurated the "Belmont Stakes", the oldest continuously run horse race in North America.  ...
