In 1864, Joseph Seligman realized his dream and founded the banking house of J. & W. Seligman & Company in New York. Taking example on the Rothschilds, he then opened branches in London, Paris, Frankfurt and later New Orleans, keeping also the one in San Francisco. There he dispatched his brothers : Isaac to London, William to Paris and Henry to Frankfurt. The younger, Leopold and Abraham, stayed in San Francisco with instructions to convert the dry goods business into banking.
