In Los Angeles, Jean Paul Getty was first sent to the Harvard Military Academy and then to the Polytechnic High School, from which he graduated in 1909. He then persuaded his father to let him work the summer as a roustabout in the oilfields of Oklahoma. At seventeen he was tall and exceptionally strong, a good swimmer, amateur boxer and weightlifter.
