… Robert Morris was a wealthy man and one of Philadelphia's foremost merchants. A patriot ever since he signed the Non-Importation Agreement in 1765, an attempt by the colonies to force Britain to repeal the Stamp Act and other taxes, Robert Morris was soon deeply engaged in the revolutionary process. He became a delegate to the Second Continental Congress and succeeded his partner Thomas Willing as secret commissioner for contracting equipment for the Continental Army. Morris never gave up his mercantile activity though and much of his government contracting was done through Willing, Morris & Co, not without healthy profits for the firm …
