The Northern Democrats as represented by Belmont rallied behind 'Senator' Douglas and he won the nomination at the Democrat National Convention. Belmont consequently accepted the chairmanship of the National Democratic Committee and started to work on the campaign against the Republicans, who nominated Lincoln. But the Southern wing of the Democrat Party supported John C. Breckinridge, on a vigorous pro-slavery and self-determination ticket.
