The Northern Pacific
Railroad received its charter after Abraham Lincoln signed the Congressional
Act on July 2, 1864. The second transcontinental railroad of the United
States was projected on a route along the 32nd parallel from Duluth
(Minnesota) to Puget Sound (Washington). At the time of its incorporation,
both ends were pretty much "nowhere", as far as (modern) civilization was
concerned, and the land in between had been object of treaties with several
