Before becoming bankers, the peddling Seligmans became respectable merchants and set up stores in Clinton, Eutaw and Greensboro, Alabama. When the elder sisters got married, Babette to Max Stettheimer and Rosalie to Morris Lehmaier (later renamed Lemaire), Joseph sent James to New York, to support the now split-up family and open a store, which he did at Nr 5 William Street in 1846. In time, this would become the location of the eleven story [ J & W ] Seligman building.    ...
