Building on this initial lucky strike, the Seligmans' California operation became so profitable, that Joseph dispatched brother Henry to San Francisco and closed the Watertown store. During these years the Seligmans became money changers, as more and more California bullion made its way East to New York and further to Europe in Seligman coffers.
