In
1856, after a long life as a bachelor, Samuel Colt finally married
Elizabeth, the 30 years old daughter of Reverend William Jarvis of
Middletown. They took a six month honeymoon in Europe and upon their return
started to build "Armsmear", a palatial estate on Colt's South Meadows
property. Samuel and Elizabeth Jarvis Colt had several children, but only
one survived childhood, a son named Caldwell Hart
Colt. Exhausted by his
continuous work at the armory, Samuel Colt died in 1862, at the still young
age of 48. At the time of his death, Colt employed 1'500 people in his
armory and a nearby furniture factory. His estate was valued …
