… With the profits he drew from his share in the Brown & Almy company, Samuel Slater started a factory for textile machinery and built other mills, in many of which he took a partnership. In 1804, his younger brother John Slater joined him in America, bringing along information about the latest developments in English textile manufacturing. Together with Brown and Almy, the two Slaters set up cotton and woolen mills at Smithville Rhode Island and thereby created an industrial community which was soon renamed Slatersville.
