William E. Dodge and the Scrantons Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company … George Whitefield Scranton (1811-1861)and Selden Theophilus Scranton (1814-1884) started their careers in the iron industry, operating the Oxford Iron Works in Warren County New Jersey, which was founded in 1743, the oldest still in operation in the United States in 1860. It was Selden Scranton's father-in-law, William Henry, who brought the brothers to the Lackawanna Valley and convinced them to start an integrated iron industry there.
