Aside
the vast Georgia timber lands, the reconstruction of the South also brought
William Earl Dodge his only presidency in a railroad company. In 1868, New
York capitalists, including Moses Taylor, John J. Cisco and William E. Dodge
took control of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad. Dodge became president
in 1871 and kept the office until 1877, when the railroad was threatened
with receivership. Steamship magnate Charles Morgan of New York then stepped
