... Sharon’s secret hope was to see the Irish would-be mining tycoons run through their Hale & Norcross profits and end penniless, as so many did before them. Digging a tunnel so deep under the earth was a slow and cumbersome work. The longer the tunnel became, the more efforts were needed to get rid of the waste and the working conditions worsened likewise, as the air got foul and the heat became unbearable. Work shifts had to be shortened to as little as fifteen minutes. In September 1872, it looked as if William Sharon’s prediction would materialize.
