    The Consolidated Virginia and California mines  

... Once they had discovered the Big Bonanza, the Irish Big Four, thoroughly exploited it, as some said mining the Comstock from both sides. James C. Flood operated successfully in Comstock Lode stocks, including the Consolidated Virginia, the California and whatever other properties the Four were after for some purpose or another. It was popular belief that the silver kings earned at least as much money on the San Francisco stock exchange than from the output of the big bonanza mines. Particularly Fair and Mackay later denied such allegations. The latter two were directly involved in a number of lucrative enterprises around the Comstock Lode mines, which added substantially to their combined fortunes.

They founded the Pacific Mill and Mining Company, which soon took the preponderant role in the ore milling on the Comstock from Sharon’s Union Mill & Mining Co. Through their Pacific Wood, Lumber & Flume Company, ...
