The Lee family of Virginia … the best known of the first families in Virginia is the Lee family, which has bred numerous revolutionary heroes and great soldiers from the Old South during Civil War. The founder of the Lee family of Virginia, Richard Lee (1618-1664), came to America in 1642, a full generation earlier than the progenitors of other famous and wealthy Virginia families. A fur trader and tobacco planter, Richard Lee established a sizeable estate he called Paradise plantation. He was also a very influent personality in Virginia politics, as an active burgess, justice, councilor, attorney general and secretary of state in close relationship to Sir William Berkeley.
