The Pacific Quartett in control of the Central Pacific Railroad … Now firmly in control of the Central Pacific Railroad, the men who would later be known as the Pacific Quartet, or the Big Four, set their railroad construction machine in motion. As one after the other contractor failed, Charles Crocker & Co took over their construction contracts and new contracts were awarded to the firm without competitive bidding. Crocker & Co functioned for the Central Pacific much as the Credit Mobilier did for the Union Pacific. But there were a few important differences which explain how the Californian promoters could make so much more money and this without the national scandal the Credit Mobilier triggered …
