Edwin Bryant Crocker was the first to die, in 1875. At the time of his death, he was no longer a partner in the Pacific Quartet, having sold his interest in the Contract & Finance Company, and the securities it held to the other partners in 1873. He still held his share in the undistributed Central Pacific stock though, making him a millionaire many times. Mark Hopkins died in 1878, leaving a fortune of $ 20 million.
