As Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt took his inherited offices at the helm of the family enterprises, Cornelius Vanderbilt III resigned from the New York Central Railroad and devoted his time to science and research. He was a successful inventor, received at least thirty patents and successfully built on his social contacts to market his inventions in Europe and America. He was among August Belmont jr's partners in the organization of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company and personally acted as a consulting engineer for the construction of the first New York City subway …
