   Formation of the New York Central Railroad  

The scattered railroads that operated between Albany and Buffalo during the 1840's recognized early enough that there was more to be gained by coordination, than by competition. The factors behind these railroads, notably Corning and Richmond, knew each others and met many times for cooperation issues prior to discuss the actual consolidation. Several attempts to unite the various railroads in one system failed due to the New York State legislature refusing to allow such a merger, doubtlessly under the still dominant influence of the Erie Canal league …
