he worked a lot for the
nomination of his father-in-law, Henry B. Payne, on the Democratic ticket,
but Tilden, although too ill to assume it, still wanted the presidency for
himself and withheld his support. Finally, ‘General’ Winfield S. Hancock of
Civil War fame was chosen as the democratic candidate and lost against James
A. Garfield.
Finally
in 1884 he
had his way and managed to get a Democrat, Grover Cleveland, elected to the
U.S. presidency. Whitney, by then known as the kingmaker, was also promptly
offered a cabinet office.
